I'm sure you've heard horror stories about editors who rewrite manuscripts, chop them into unrecognizable pieces, and basically destroy the story. Do you personally know anyone who has had this happen? In my experience, the people who claim this are usually beginning writers who think their words are golden, and refuse to acknowledge that they could be improved upon.
 
Victoria Strauss discusses "The Myth of the Evil Editor" on the Writer Beware blog.  As always, some of the comments are nearly as good as the article itself.
 
I'm sure there are some terrible editors out there, since editors are people too. Do you worry that a contract with a big publishers will destroy your work?
