This week I began a new WIP. The working title is Chasing the Dragon. Sounds like one of the seven basic plots we read about now and again. The whole idea that all of our hard work can be boiled down to the number seven strikes me as over simplistic and inspired at the same time. No one says we can't combine these plots. But for chat we will stick to the straight up seven.
I like to visit with this topic when I am beginning a project and again at the end. Knowing for certain that you have a Rags to Riches plot can verify you've stayed on track throughout your work. A dramatic change in plot might mean you need to retrace and revise. The blog post I am using is child centered and that makes it 'all the better to eat you with, my dear.' American journalist Barbara Grizzuri Harrison once said "There are no origional ideas. There are only original people." I hate to break the news, but maybe she was right. According to one school of thought, every story we've ever read, those we may be currently working on, and those yet to be written are all reworks of what are known as the seven basic plot types. Having an understanding of what these plot types are and how they work makes it easier to craft our own stories... Come on over to the chatroom and help me through the topic.
