Judy's main interest has been the experiences of women in the American West, and she's written 6 adult novels with that theme and 7 young-adult novels. Two of the adult novels, now called Western Historical Romances--
Libbie and Sundance, Butch and Me--are available on Kindle, as are children's books on a variety of subjects.
Judy is also the author of a memoir/cookbook (Cooking My Way Through
Life with Kids and Books), a collection of short stories (Sue Ellen Learns to Dance and Other Stories
), and 2 books studying the work of Texas
author Elmer Kelton.
Retiring after 30 years with Texas Christian University Press, 20 of them as director, Judy now devotes her attention to writing mysteries and, still and forever, writing about Texas. It's always been her secret ambition to write mysteries. She has 3 novels in her Kelly O'Connell Mysteries series--Skeleton in a Dead Space
, No
Neighborhood for Old Women, and Trouble in a Big Box.
Two of her short stories have been honored with a Western Heritage (Wrangler) Award from the National Cowboy Museum; one novel, Mattie, won a Spur Award from Western Writers of America (WWA) and in 2005
she received the Wister Award for Lifetime Achievement from WWA. She was named an Outstanding Woman of Fort Worth and was listed as one of 100 women, living and dead, who have left their mark on Texas in a list compiled by the Dallas Morning News--pretty good for a girl from the South Side of Chicago, but she has
lived in Fort Worth almost fifty years.
Judy is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters, Sisters in Crime (SinC), and the Guppies chapter of SinC.
She never thought retirement could be so busy or so rewarding.
