The Writer's Chatroom Topic Chat: Taking Back Control Of What We Write...And Read
Published: Wed, 08/06/14
(Sally Franklin Christie is in charge tonight)
Following last week's controversial topic on Outlining
I thought I'd bring up another topic in defense of Literary authors and
readers.
Taking Back Control of What We Write--and Read: Moving Past Our Training and CultureI majored in Psychology and English Literature. I can
tell you what I've read and why the author wrote the story. I enjoy leisurely
descriptions of settings. I didn't mind at all the pages and pages showing me
the prolonged reaction scenes of Theo as he made his way back to his mother's
apartment after the explosion at the museum. -The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
-
But, I am the same person who enjoyed an equally
descriptive novel called The Stand by Stephen King.
Come on over to the chatroom and we can look at why
many authors and readers are falling away from literary fiction and flocking to
genre novels. We can also have a look at why trying our hand at composing a
literary art form might be good for us as we hone our skills at writing in
general.
I still miss Theo, Boris and a little dog called
Popper. I miss Trashcan Man, Nick
Andros and Tom Cullen.
We'll take any other questions you may have in the second hour.
