I was planning a topic around the use of Snapchat and Instagram for building your social network and reaching out to fans under the age of 35. The more I learned - The less I knew. So, I have tabled this topic for the time being.

Let's talk about Building Websites!

If you’re considering WordPress as your platform of choice, here’s what you should know as you prepare to build on it.

1. Use WordPress.com as a low-pressure, easy way to begin, with confidence in its long-term prospects.

2. Invest a lot of upfront time researching what theme or theme technology you want to use.

3. To add e-commerce functionality, invest in premium plugins or themes.

4. Cheap hosting is OK for low-traffic sites, but outages may be common, and support not so supportive.

5. Only use plugins that you really need. Research them just as you would themes.

6. Always login to your site at least once a week to check for updates and make sure everything looks as it should.

7. If you encounter roadblocks or problems, Google it first.

Even in this social media age, having a good author website is still important. Websites give authors credibility and act as their home on the web, directing information-seekers to where they can buy the book, connect with the author on social media, or book the author for a speaking engagement.

8. Bow to Your Audience

When you set up your website, consider the audience that will be visiting. Who are they?

What do they want or need? How can you give them what they’re looking for?

Author websites can see a varied audience, including readers, retailers, media, and librarians. Write down on a piece of paper which one of these is the most important, second, third, etc.  Does your site give your primary audience what they need or want? If not, it may be time to revamp your website.

TIP: Free survey tools like Survey Monkey can help you find out who is coming to your site and what they would like to see. Your marketer can help advise you on this.
